ready for what lies ahead: class of 2034!
Raising your hand; walking in line; knowing what it means to sit “criss-cross applesauce.” Making sure students (and their parents) are prepared for those very first few days of school is the goal of Kindergarten 101, a kindergarten-readiness initiative being funded by Greenfield Central School Foundation and Purdue Extension—Hancock County. Kindergarten 101
Continuing a legacy
of success!
K101 is a free, week-long summer program that targets children who have not been in day care or preschool, or who have not had social experiences to prepare them to start school. It teaches basic skills some parents might take for granted, such as having children focus on a task for 30 minutes or more, share with others and wait their turn.
The program completed its twelfth year in 2023 and served over 30 students last summer. Held at one of Greenfield’s elementary schools, K101 helps the soon-to-be kindergarteners get accustomed to new surroundings. Becoming familiar with the library, cafeteria, gym and playground before school starts helps ease some anxiety while getting these young ones excited about a new experience.
As a sponsor of K101, Greenfield Central School Foundation believes in the importance of preparing all students for the rigors of starting school.
By giving these children a head start, K101 allows kindergarten teachers to spend more time on academics and less time on basic skills. It also helps identify students who may need extra help in the long run. Along with the program for children, parents are invited to an evening information session to acquaint them with school personnel, attendance policies, important dates and other useful information.
Building confidence for everyone involved is key, and GCSF is proud to help prepare these students and their parents for success.
