What is an Education Foundation?
An education foundation is a community-based, privately funded, non-profit organization that funds public education initiatives through grants and other programs. Education foundations provide schools with another source of funding beyond what is provided by state and local government resources to pilot new ideas.
Who supports the Greenfield Central Education Foundation (GCSF)?
Individuals including parents, grandparents, alumni, community members and educators support through individual donations and community fundraising. Businesses, corporations and larger foundations are also providing support for GCSF.
What is GCSF’s relationship with the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation (G-CCSC)?
GCSF is an independent 501(c)3 charitable organization. In keeping with its mission, GCSF is intended to enhance rather than replace funding for the G-CCSC budget.
What kind of programs does GCSF support?
- supplemental funds for field trips
- classroom materials
- convocations
- skills materials
- kindergarten readiness program
- supplemental technology funds
- arts, science, and language programs
- supplemental funding for extra-curricular projects
- special needs
Don’t my property taxes already pay for education?
The district’s Operations Fund is funded directly by local property taxes. These funds are limited to capital projects, bus replacement, debt service, and transportation.
How does GCSF benefit G-CCSC?
Stretching the dollars as far as possible, the schools have little left for unique opportunities such as real-world exploration and practical, hands-on experiences that further foster learning. As the face of the future workforce changes, GCSF is committed to sponsoring new programs that will help our students rise to the challenge. Our goal is to ensure that a Greenfield-Central school education gives our students a clear advantage – and goes far beyond the basics.
I am a business owner. Why should I invest in GCSF?
G-CCSC has your future employees. Strong schools produce outstanding future workers and are valuable assets in maintaining and growing Greenfield’s economy.
I am a Greenfield homeowner and do not have children in the school district. Why should I invest in GCSF?
As the desire for homes in nicer, high-rated school districts increases, so does the price of homes in the area.
Who can apply for a Foundation grant?
Any Greenfield-Central employee is eligible and encouraged to apply for a grant.
Who decides which projects to fund?
GCSF board votes on recommendations made by its Grants Committee. Grant criteria favor projects that augment and enhance the educational experience. These projects will not typically be funded by taxpayers’ dollars and are outside the scope of the school district budget.
What accountability is there for Foundation funds?
GCSF is recognized under state and federal law as a 501(c)3 charitable, tax-exempt organization. The Board of Directors carefully oversees donations and grants as stewards of resources. These financial records are open to public review.
Does the Foundation compete with the PTO, booster clubs and other groups for financial support?
No. Such groups have valid, specific purposes within the public schools and solicit support for limited and special projects. GCSF seeks support from those interested in the broader aspects of education, in order to enhance the opportunities for students across the school district.
How can people in the community assist this effort?
Tax deductible contributions can be made by any individual, business or corporation. Individuals can also volunteer to help with GCSF committees and fundraising efforts.
